They encountered an Irish army in Kiltybegs in a field called the "I sland" and tradition has it that they were defeated by the Irish and they were all slain but two a father and son and these two had a secret way of making wine from heather unknown to the Irish and the Irish tried to force them to devulge this secret so the father said he would tell them how if they put his son to death so when this was carried out he said you may do likewise to me as when he is death theres no one else to tell tale and he was put to death this happened in Dunelty bog and the battlefield I have mentioned is adjacent to the bog and you can see the "rises" in the ground to this day indicating the graves of the slain. There was a monastery and graveyard on the South side of this
