My Home District
the name of my downland is Caranamorheeny, in the Parish of Elphn, and Barony of Roscommon. There are five families in my downland and about twenty-six people. Some years ago the family name most common was Murray. One house is slated, one has a zinc roof and three are thatched. "Caranamorheeny" I am told means downland of the "boreens". There is an old person over 70 living in my downland now, no person knows any Irish, some of them can tell stories in English, such as:- Mr PAtrick Larkin
Caranamorheeny,
Elphin.
In former times there were far more houses in this townland than there are now. There are the remains still of the ruins of two of them, and the track of the sites of some others can be easily traced. Lots of people emigrated from this townland to America and England in former years.
Some of the land is quite good and more bad, none of it-(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
