- A Tale of the Penal DaysConvenient to the town of Kenmare and about a mile to the east of it there is a townland called Killowen. During the Penal Days when the Redcoats were hunting down the priests they captured one in this townland.
They put him to death, by beheading him, on the doorstep of a local Protestant's house. When he was dying a stream of blood flowed on the doorstep. This, however, could not be cleaned off. One night the people of the house took the stone out and threw it into the sea and they put a new stone in its stead. The next morning when the housekeeper went to open the door she saw similar streaks on the new stone. Ever since the stone is covered with carpet.
