  1. This story was related to me by Mr. Bartholomew Sullivan of Ballinahown Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry.
He is a farmer of about sixty years and also an officer in the employment of the Board of Health.
He was born and brought up in Ballinahown where he has lived since childhood.
Mr. O'Sullivan was told this rather queer story by a man named David Fleming about thirty-five or forty years ago. Mr. Fleming lived in Ballinahown also during his lifetime.
The man named Jocko Mc Auliffe about whom this story is told was a friend of David Fleming.
Both men worked together as hired labourers, on the farm now owned by Mr. Bartholomew O/Sullivan, for years.
Mr. O'Sullivan assured me that the following story is exactly as he heard it himself many times from David Fleming.
I record the story here verbatim.

    The Story.
Jocko Mc Auliffe was one day mowing hay with a scythe for a neighbour, James Hickey of Ballinattin, Knocknagorsh It was about the year 1845.
Jocko was a very bad edger and mowing was very troublesome to him for want of edge.
An old beggar came the way and stood looking
