1. The Manufacture of Linen

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   Introduction of the manufacture of linen in the townland of Meenleitrim long ago, was related by Mr. Bartholomew Hickey of Meenleitrim, Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry.

   He is a farmer and about fifty-five years of age. He was born and reared in Meenleitrim and has lived there since childhood.

   Flax was grown by people pf the locality about fifty years ago.

   I write down his description word for word as told by himself.

   The description was recorded in this book in March 1938.

   The Description.

   First the flax-seed was bought at the shops and set in spring.

   It was fully grown for the first of August.

   Then it was pulled and bound in bundles.

   It was then put into a bog-hole and left there "bogging" for nine days.

   After that the flax was taken out and spread very lightly on the ground. It was left in that way for a week to bleach and dry.

   Then it was again bound in bundles and put
