- In early times, about the middle of the nineteenth century, it was a custom by the people to go to the sea-side for sea-weed, as top-dress for the land, but they generally went on Sunday night after twelve o'clock. The idea of going at that hour was, that they might not break the Sabbath and, at the same time, not to leave even such a short time go waste but to spend it in the best way to improve the land and, so, be able to pay the rent to the land-lord.
