doors are common in this district. I often saw them. They were used for keeping out the fowl, the pigs and the calves. Some people believe it to be unlucky to build an addition to the western side of a house. Turf and wood were used for the fire. Ash was mostly used for lighting the fire especially in Spring when the turf was bad. If there was an ash tree near a house, its branches were cut off for firewood. Bog deal splinters were used for giving light at night.
