- Potatoes are sown during the month of April and the beginning of May The early varieties such as Epicures and Arran Banners are sown in the beginning of April and the late varieties such as Champions and Kerrs Pinks are not sown until the latter part of April Potatoes which are intended for seed the following year are sown in moorland and they are not sown until the month of May When preparing for potatoes for seed the healthiest potatoes are picked Then they are cut in splits leaving an eye or two in each split Then two persons go out into the field to set them One person has a "scibin" with which he makes holes in the ridges He makes three holes in the breadth of the ridges and he leaves the rows one foot apart Another person with a bucket of splits comes along and drops a split in each hole The holes are then closed.
