The old main road from Carrick on Shannon via Mohill to Carrickallen went up Mullagharaa hill, and out by Tullyoran. There is joined the present main road. Beyond Cloone it took to the hills again and the new road kept to the low ground.
The road starting at Gortfadda and going via Aughakilfaughnan to Adoon is comparatively new. It was built about 80 years ago by a man called Dobson. The stones for making it had been raised during famine times in a quarry near Leeve's cut in Currawn. This was relief work and the men were paid fourpence perday. They lay in heaps for some time before they were used.
The people of that district were to go in the Mohill by the old road (noted on the map) the traces of which can be easily seen to this day. The river was crossed by a ford at the place where the present bridge is. The cutting on Drumcroy hill was made when the Narrow-Guage railway was built.
