    Utensils used in eating
    In olden times it was very common sight to see the family seated around the basket which was full of potatoes and this rested on top of a pot. Each one held a poronger of buttermilk under his oxter and peeled the potatoes with his thumb nail. This took the place of knives. They kept those nails long and they were accustomed to this peeling and in two two's they would have a plate full peeled. Some people used to have side tables and when each meal would be eaten they used to leave up the side table against the wall. they used "Crannsáns" ...wooden spoons of a circular shape with a flat shallow bottom for holding the eggs and they had a flesh fork with four prongs on it. it had a handle about one foot long and it was used for taking bacon out of cabbage. Some of these spoons still remain in houses but they are not
