   of whiskey and they are brought to the grandest room in the house. Then the matchmaker says to the girls father "What about your daughter marrying this fine man. He has a good farm of land and a good and a good working man himself" The girls father says nothing for a while and after a while he says "Well he has five cows place and a horse." "I don't think so" says the father. "But I know that when his father was living there he had only three cows places and an old ass" Then the matchmaker says "Oh! but he bought Dugnan's land since that" "Very well" says the father "But how much money will he be asking," The matchmaker thinks for a while and then says to his wife "Well Lizzie what do you think of that." Then she thinks and says "Well Joe I think your farm is every bit as a good as his and I got in here for one hundred pounds but maybe time are getting better and one hundred and fifty pounds would not be too bad." Sometimes they settle at this and they arrange the day for the marriage. During this time the house of the bride is a clearing. Sometimes the bride never sees the groom until the morning of the wedding and she very often is surprised when she sees a very ugly old man which she would not have married if she was left to herself. If she begins to grumble she is told to shut up and take a good man and a good place. Before they go to the church there is an old shoe tied to the back of the car for good luck
