gather there and would fight to see which would win. There used to be men killed in the fight. There used to be men selling sweets near the well. There was one man who used to sell sweets. He was very cross and the children used to call him "bageen of weasels"

  2. On St. Kerril's Day, beginning about 35 year ago, a procession used to be formed in Gurteen after High Mass and every parishioner as well as others from surrounding parishes used to march to Kerril's Well in Gortnalon where stations were made. This procession was begun by Father Coughlan, popularly known as Fr Dan. During the whole journey from Gurteen to Gortnalon, a distance of 3 miles, hymns were sung. This custom was continued for about ten or twelve years. People now visit the well at any time during the feast day, to pray. The parishioners attend Mass on that day and pass the day as they do all Holidays of Obligation. No manual work is done. A sermon is preached on St. Kerril. The water of Kerril's well is supposed to cure sore eyes and headaches.
