- Fairs
Fairs were not held as often long ago as they are now. Some years ago there were only three or four fairs in the year. Now there are fairs for horses, cattle and sheep. They are not all held the same day. In some towns the fairs are held in a park outside the town. The park is called the "Fair Green". When selling a horse, the halter is given. Ballinasloe is the biggest fair held in Ireland. Toll is paid for every beast sold. It is paid to a man at the station. The amount is four pence each for cattle and three-half pence for bonhams. Some buyers mark the cattle with raddle and others mark them by cutting a mark. Money is given back to the buyer. It is called the Luck money. The amount is a shilling, or one and six. If the beasts are not going by train the toll is paid to a man who stands on the road out side the town.
