- (continued from previous page)nailer by trade who died around the year 1910. He was a first class trades man and worked all his life as a nailer and did an extensive business He supplied all the shoemakes wihtin a radius of six miles with nails for boots. Local shoemakers were very plentyfully then and factory shoes were unheard of then. He also did a large trade with slatenails which were all hand made in his days. But alas his trade died with himself the machine made nails killed it.
The craft of linen making was very extensive in this neighbourhood fifty or sixty years ago. First the farmers sewed a plot of flax and when ripe they pulled it and saved it. It was then put into bog holes for a time. After that it was hackled and scutched by local women who were very good at this branch of work. It was made into hanks and then they made it into yarn or flax thread. It was then taken to the waver and woven into beautiful sheets and towels. Then it was brought home and bleached. But alas this beautiful industry is also dead.(continues on next page)- Collector
