  1. In the olden times spinning and weaving were the chief industries in all the country houses.
The women did the spinning in the long Winter evenings. There were two kinds of spinning wheels one for linen thread and the other for spinning woollen thread. The linen thread was got from the flax, which grew on the land, and the woollen thread was got from the wool which was sheared off the sheep. The women took great pride in the spinning and it was a lovely sight to see them the strands of wool in their hands at the spinning wheel and watch it being spun into thread which was made into large balls. This thread was used for knitting stocking's and and socks. The linen thread was woven into linen and the linen used for shirts, tablecloths, towels and bed linen. The woollen thread was also woven into flannel frieze and tweed which was used for making all kinds of clothes. The spinning wheels, were made of wood and can be seen in the country houses still.
My Grandmother R.I.P had a spinning wheel in our house long ago and she used to spin wool with it into thread and knit the thread and knit the thread into stockings and socks.
