  1. Kilconly is the name of my native village. It derived its name from a surname called Connolly and a grave. Two men brought a coffin
    in a cart drawn by a wild, fidgety
    old horse, from some remote place in mayo to the old church in Kil-
    shanvy. It was almost dark when
    they arrived there, so they left the
    horse, cart and coffin outside whi-
    le they were making the grave, but
    in the meantime the horse went
    and when the grave was finished
    there was no coffin to go into it. The
    men were perplexed for a while; till
    one of them said that, as the horse
    was facing east, she certainly did not turn on the road to go back
    again, so they travelled in this direct-
    ion. At dawn the overtook the
    horse at the corner of the graveyard
    were the iron railing is now. As
    the journey was long to return to Kil-
    shany, they decided to make another grave inside the wall there. When
