   His captors issued forth their stern decree,
   "In prison wait till twenty years has sped."
   He braved the dangers of the Antartic Sea
   And 'scaped their thraldom, ah! but now he's dead.

   Yet he had lived to give them blow for blow
   And wreaked full vengeance both by tongue and pen,
   In that far greater Ireland, where we know
   The Irish felon was beloved of men.
   In that vast land where dwells no "upper ten,"
   Where mild equality uprears her head,
   John Boyle O'Reilly rose to famous ken,
   Alas, we mourn him too early dead.

   America! we gruage thee not his clay,
