- In former times in Ireland many people did not wear boots or shoes until they were about sixteen or seventeen years of age. At that time there were no bootshops in Donegal. There were shops where leather was sold. This people bought and brought home with them. The shoemaker would then come to the house and make the boots or shoes. Previous to this time boots or shoes of guttapercha were made. These boots could be repaired by the people who wore them as the sole could be melted and stuck on by the use of warm irons. In our district in former times there were about forty shoemakers who all got employment making boots and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
