    Baking in olden days had a different system of working than in the present day.

    ovens. In the turf ovens, there would be a fire lit in it, and it would be let burn down, and when burned down the fire would be scattered in it, the ovens were built with brick and toil. When the fire would be taken out of the oven, it would be washed with a thing called the scuffle and when the oven would be tempered the loaves would be put in one by one on the sole with a peal. When they would be in, it would be closed up and let bake for an hour and a half.
