- Somewhere about three thousand BC life became easier in Ireland with the melting of the snow and the retreat of the ice. The discovery in the ground of copper, made possible new weapons and tools for slaying enemies and wild animals and for felling trees. The Stone Age gave way to the Copper Age. A new epoch opened with the invention of using tin to harden the soft copper so as to make weapons and tools of greater strength.
