- (continued from previous page)Another annual fair, a cattle fair, is held at Tullyvin on the forth of May.
There were always fairs held at these places. Buyers often transact business in the country or at crossroads.
There is no toll on cattle sold in the local fairs except the toll at the Market-house for getting grain weighed and at Carrickmacross when you sell a basket of eggs, or butter you must pay on or two pennies of toll.
When cattle is sold there is always a luck-penny given. When a bargin is made the parties concerned show their agreement by striking hands and by spitting on the luck-penny.
When animals are sold they are marked on the flank with mud or on the back or side with "keal" or scissor's clip
Some men when buying cattle put their initials on them and others have a special mark of their own.
When animals are sold the halters or reins are nearly always given especially in the case of horses.
