  1. get a small packet of saltpetre put it in a half pint of water and boil it. Then get a piece of calico or thick black paper and soak the calico or black paper in the saltpetre. This is now called touche. Then get a glassey black stone which is called flint ; tear a bit of the touche and leave it on the flint, then get a piece of steel strike the flint with the steel and sparks will fly on to the touche and it will light like a match.
