These were used as a protection against fowl coming in or other animals, also to give some light.Turf was principally used for the fire and timber to a lesser extent. "Borauns", dried cow-dung, were gathered in the fields and used as fuel also. For light a rag was dipped in grease and set in a tin or canister. There were also rush lights, dipped in tallow. Bogdeal was also split and lit. A string of cotton was dipped in melted tallow and allowed to dry. Then dipped again and left dry.
