    The night was dark dark cold blew the wind
    And bitter fell the rain
    As Bessie left her lonely home
    She came not back again.

    She left her mothers widow side
    Neired feared the wind nor cold
    The girl was young and fair to see
    But love had made her bold.
    III
    The night was spent and day did dawn
    And Bessie was not home
    Which caused her fiends to wonder.
    Where Bessie thus could roam.

    At length he mother started up
    She cried in accents wild
    I search the country o'er o'er
    To find my darling child
    V
    For three long dreary weeks she spent
    In wandering up and down
    Her journey proved of no avail
