Ar an leathanach seo

  1. Athlone was once a fortified town. The remains of some of the fortifications are still in existence. Traces of the old walls are to be seen down St Francis Tce, Northgate St, Dublingate St. There are still to be seen the steps where the old Bridge spanned the river. The first bridge was made of wickerwork but it was pulled down as being too weak and a stone one constructed in its place. One of the old walls was demolished some years ago for the construction of a road leading into St. Francis Tce. The wall was situared opposite Garden Pale Tce.
