It is believed that there is an underground tunnel...

It is believed that there is a tunnel between Mellifont and Drogheda, a distance of three or four miles, but where it starts and ends is a puzzle. It is said that the monksused to go by that passage long ago. One day the monks were coming from Drogheda, and when the first monk reached Mellifont he discovered that he had forgotten the Mass book. He told the monk behind him and the word went back and the last monk leaving Drogheda was in time to bring the book. This shows that there must have been a great number of monks in the old monastery.
