  1. On Shrove Tuesday, about thirty years ago in the Catholic Church in Newcastle, about four miles from Ardfinnan, there were elven weddings, all celebrated at the one time. When they came out of the church they all formed one long procession and drove around the country.
    Then the procession broke up and each party went to the house of the bridegroom where the wedding party was held and where they enjoyed themselves till twelve o clock when they "broke up". Ash Wednesday being the first day in Lent all the celebrations finished at twelve o'clock. My mother, Mrs Doran, who told me this and who saw all the weddings at Newcastle lives now at Rochestown Ardfinnan
