- (continued from previous page)three sliced lemons simmered on the hob with a lb of sugar candy or a lb of barley sugar. Black currant jelly (home made) taken very hot is another good remedy.
6. A favourite cure in rural Ireland for colds, hoarseness, and stiffness in the head is a large cup of very hot milk with an oz of butter and one shake of pepper in it.
7. In early spring our Grandmothers make up a jar of liquid to purify the blood. This consists of 1 lb of treacle, 6 oz of sulphur and a like quantity of cream of Tartar. Each morning on rising we children are obliged to take a spoonful of this mixture. In addition, during the month of March young tender nettles are boiled with home cured bacon, dressed with butter and eaten for three successive days. Both these remedies were unfailing cures for pimples, rough skin, and blotches.
8. For convulsions in young children a hot bath with two tea-spoonfuls of mustard was a safe cure, followed by a dose of castor oil.
