    On one occasion there lived in the town of Birr a man called Pat Daly.

    stranger who answered "Good night and where have you been till this time of the night". "Card playing" said Pat. "Would you like to play a game with me", asked the stranger. Pat replied that he would so they sat down. The stranger pulled out a bag of sovereigns and laid them beside him. So they started. Pat's luck was with him again and soon he had a pile of stranger's sovereigns beside him.
    Just when the clock struck one the stranger dropped a card. Pat bent to pick it up, and had just time to see that it was the ace of spades before he saw something that chilled the blood in his veins. Instead of a neat pair of shoes and stocking he saw the cloven hoof. He had been playing cards with the devil and winning. Pat is an old man
