    We are told that Sir John had a great devotion and intense love for the Mass, and neither bad weather nor length of road, nor danger of prison could prevent him from being present at the Holy Sacrifice.
    In those dangerous times, when priests were hunted like wolves throughout the lands, he especially devoted himself to organising an escort for the missionary priests, for the Dominicans to whom he was deeply attached.
    On the death of Queen Elizabeth when the Catholics re-took possession of their churches to practise their religion, once more, Sir John took a prominent part in the struggle at Limerick. On account of such activity he was thrown into prison, and there confined under terrible conditions in Dublin Castle.
