pupils. The master lodged in the farmers' houses round and taught the children there during his stay.
A few yards to the north of the town of Doneraile there was another hedge school. In this a Protestant teacher and a Catholic teacher taught, Jerry Quinlan was the Catholic teacher and Beuchanann was the Protestant teacher The man who told me about this old school said that his brother went to Jerry Quinlan to learn his lessons. Often Jerry and his boys turned on Beuchanann and gave him a fine thrashing, which he well deserved sometimes. This school was held in a kind of hut or "bóthan" and in Lord Castletown's demesne wall there is still the remains of the old door which led into this school.
