who lived in the cave with him. Daniel often made sonnets and ballads in her praise. A reward was offered for Daniel’s capture and this induced Margt. to betray him.
She was accustomed to go to Mallow to buy provisions and always crossed the Blackwater in the boat which was concealed in the cave. She agreed with the officer in command at Mallow to betray O'Keeffe for a certain sum of money.
This money was to be paid to her on O’Keeffe’s death or arrest, and she received a written order to that effect. O’Keeffe was to be shot when he was next crossing the river in the boat to enable his companion to proceed to Mallow.
After this very wicked agreement Margaret returned to the cave but Daniel caught sight of the paper hidden in her dress. He snatched the document and read it. When he discovered the contents he became almost insane with rage and he stabbed her through the heart with his knife.

    Thy voice 'mid the concert

And thy raven hair bound them,
    Young Maighréad Ní Cheallaigh.
