  1. Most of the houses long ago were thatched. Some were thatched were reed, straw, and the poorer classes covered their houses with rushes. A thatcher has a ladder and goes on the roof of the house and puts on what is called a bay of reed and fastens it with scollops putting on bay by bay until it is finished. It is a very cold job on a cold day or in cold weather A thatcher is very well fed and gets a glass of whiskey every morning while he is thatching.
    Denis O Connor of Dromscarra he was known as Dunscombe, Dave Bohan of Knockavoreen, Callaghan, known as Caluach of Kippagh were old thatchers.
