    making the bread, it is said that smuts used to fall on the flour and that is the reason it is called black-bread.
    Potato-cake was also very common in this district in olden times. The potatoes were kneaded before placing in the bastible. This was known as "Stampy"
    Enough bread was baked on one day to last for a week, as the people would eat too much of it, if it were always used fresh. According as the bread dried up it would go further.
    As years passed by, the methods of baking became more modern, and now people can purchase bread in any baker's shop for a couple of pence.
