   picked. They are covered with rushes, straw and earth. When they are setting the potatoes they turn the peeks towards the top of the ground. Long ago the potatoes were set in ridges but they are mostly set in drills now.

   In olden days the potatoes were set in ridges. Six sods were ploughed to form a ridge and the last sod of each ridge was called the caol Fhód The ridges were hacked with a griffaun before the scolains were stuck. Four scoláins were stuck in the width of the ridge. The openings made by the spade were closed with a bailcín. In some cases two strong furze bushes on which were placed two heavy sods were drawn over the ridge to close the holes. If the manure was not spread before ploughing, it was carted out and placed in heaps on the ridges after which it was spread. The furrows were ploughed and the earth thrown. When the stalks came up the second earth was ploughed and thrown in the same way. Very often when the ground was hilly the manure
