In the following manner the robin got his red breast. When Our Lord was dying the robin was trying to take the nails out of His hands. In this way the blood fell on his breast and he has a red breast ever since.
Long ago when the king of the birds was giving the birds their colours. All the birds were picking colours until at last all the colours were gone. The goldfinch was left without any. The king of the birds called back all the other birds and took a feather out of each of them, and gave them to the goldfinch. In this way the goldfinch got its colours.
