  1. Shops were not common in olden times. The people had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was carried on after Mass. Money was always given for goods. Labour was given in exchange for goods also. The words that were connected with buying and selling in olden times are boot, change, tick, cant. It was unlucky to give money for anything on the first Monday of the new year. The markets were held in the towns in former times and are still held.
