  1. The candles were made from rushes in olden times. The people went to the bog and cut rushes and brought them home and peeled them. When the had them peeled they hung them over the fire to dry for a few days. Then they dipped them in melted fat. Then there was a rod stuck down in a sod of turf. There was a split in the rod and the candle was stuck down in the split.
