    castings were made there. Farm implements such as ploughs, harrows, railings to enclose cemeteries, gardens, and so on, grates, gates, fans, and the like were manufactured. The local market absorbed the produce of the foundry, but when the factories in Britain, Germany, and the United States commenced the mass-productiuon of iron-ware the foundry could not compete, it being impossible to produce such well-finished articles or to sell them to the public for the prices at which the factories retailed them. Thus about thirty years ago the foundry was closed down and has never been re-opened since.

    Mr. Patrick Mahon was a road contractor in his early career. One day he was making the street. He went into the late Mr. Patrick O'Leary's yard for something and he noticed a strange, ancient, pump in the corner of the yard. He asked Mr. O'Leary what it was for, and he told him it belonged to a man named Rossiter who owned a brewery in Graignamanagh, about two hundred years ago. In those days barter took place between the shopkeepers and the farmers. The latter bought the beer. The amount they got was marked on a tally-stick. After a certain
