    under cover of darkness towards the city and had not long to wait before they observed Father Grace being escorted through the prison gates by his captors. Capt. Grace and his men lost no time. They rushed the prison gates struck left and right overpowering the enemy who was completely taken by surprise. The Sheriff however was inwardly delighted with the turn of events and determined if possible to assist in the release of the priest. He persuaded his men that it was useless to pursue the rescuers. Capt. Grace with his brother and the other members of the rescue party were soon out of reach of the enemy and a week later were all on board a French lugger which bore them away in safety to France but with tears in their eyes for the dear old home of Kilkenny and the land of their fathers.
