    there was no such thing as compulsory education, but teachers often went from house to house, teaching the people. Those men were known as the "wise men". Old Nurse Moraghan's father, was a "wise man" and he was paid by his pupils parents.
    There was also a school on the right-hand side of Abbeytown Bridge. The teachers were changed almost every year, and frequently the Protestant Clergy, taught there. It was a mixed school, and was attended by about one hundred people.
    There was also a school in the house, now occupied by Mr. Owens, opposite the railway. Two old ladies, the Misses Heagertys, taught there. The school was attended by about seventy pupils, mostly country children.
