The rowantree or mountain ash was said to be lucky, and on that account the red berries were scattered under the cows. Long ago a fire was set at the cross roads on May eve and boys and girls danced about it and on returning home, each one brought a coal for luck. It was also though that if a stranger entered the house on May day, he would take all the luck with him. May Day Customs
