“We have a churn at home.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)The sides are round and it is wide at the top and bottom and a little bit narrow in the middle. The parts are the dash and the lid. When the cream is sour it is put into the churn, and left for a while to thicken. Everyone in the house churns and if any stranger came in he would have to churn. The dash is moved up and down, and when the churning is finished, the dash is moved from side to side to gather the butter. Then a sod of turf on a brick is put under the churn and the churn is rocked to get the butter together. People know when the butter is made, when the handle of the dash is clear. Hot water is put in while churning to help to churn. The butter is lifted out with a wooden plate and made with salt. Certain marks are put on the butter such as shamrocks, and double crosses. Before churning a pinch of salt is put on the lid of the churn to bring luck.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
