St. Finnbar at first lived in a lonely cave in Valley Desmond. After some years he built a little church in the Island of Gougane.

Every day he used to walk around the Island, but never spoke to anyone. It is said that serpents frequented the lake and often did a lot of damage.
One day he devoured a man and the saint happened to be present. He took out his book, and prayed, the serpent appeared, vomited up the man, but the saint banished him from at the river Lee to Eve Leary, where he was found
