  1. The old houses of houses of long ago were thatched. Some of them had only one room. They got the thatch by cutting sedge. There was a bed in the kitchen. It was placed at the side wall.
    The fire was always at the gable end of the house. Some houses had no chimney only a hole made in the roof to let out the smoke. There were some houses which had no glass in the window, only a bag filled with hay put in every night and taken out every morning. Half doors were used formerly and are still used
