  1. Cromwell
Towards the end of the 17th century Cromwell came to Ireland. He had a great number of agents. His right name was Oliver Williams instead of Cromwell. He was not able to pay his soldiers, so he threw out the people, gave their homes and lands to them in lieu of payment. At Collooney a man named O'Brien owned Markree. Cromwell or some of his agents shot him, put out his wife and children and gave it to a soldier named Coote for his services. Some of the soldiers would not settle in Ireland and sold their land and homes to others. Cornet Cooper bought Markree and married Mrs. O'Brien. The children were afterwards called Coopers.
