    In the year 1879 Captain Fenton of Castletown Easkey Co. Sligo hanged a Fenian, a widow's son. The scaffold was erected on Easkey bridge. The rope broke three times and Fenton said "if there is a rope in Easkey he will be hanged" so he got the rope and hanged the boy. At that time there was in Easkey a P.P. called Fr Devine who was known to be friendly with the Fenians. Fenton swore on oath that he would shoot Fr. Devine at sight.
