- (continued from previous page)About the middle of the day a witch crossed their path. Everyone engaged in the hunt pursued her - After a little Billy found himself alone with his stock in his chase of the witch. When they were very near her she climbed up a tree & sat on a branch looking down on them. Billy ordered her to come down - She said she would when he tied up his stock. Billy agreed - but no sooner were the stock tied than he & his four animals were turned into five stones by the witch.
During all this time Jack & his stock had travelled far & were miles & miles distant from Billy. One night Jack felt that Billy was in danger - so he returned as he had been told to the tree at the crossroads where the two knives were stuck.
He examined the knives & saw that Billy’s knife was only rusted — then he knew that he was not dead but in danger. He set out on the road that Billy first took & after much travelling he arrived at the public house which Billy first visited. He went in, called for a drink for(continues on next page)- Collector
