- Cromwell
During the time that Cromwell was in Ireland his soldiers captured about 20 young girls, 28 young men, one priest near Athenry and locked them up in their castle. The people becoming enraged at this said that they would starve the soldiers, and no one would sell them food. There was a young man living in Newcastle who said he would set the innocent captives free. Accordingly, he dressed up as an old man and filled an ass cart with the best of food and drink and brought it into the soldiers. Then they(continues on next page)
