    decided to return after twelve and raid the turnip crop. They went home and had supper such as it was. As the clock struck twelve my grandfather left his own house to meet the gang at the appointed hour and place. He crossed fields, hedges and ditches until he came to the ditch in Mr. Digby's going into the turnip field. He topped the ditch and was about to jump inside when lo and behold you what did he see but the ghost of his father who had died a few years before and his hands raised as if imploring him to go back.
